Basil Earle Wainwright
The writer is a retired mechanical engineer who has been investigating the medical uses of ozone since 1985, along with a number of medical people, including MD’s. microbiologists, and hematologists. Early in 1988, we heard about an Englishman, Basil Wainwright, who was operating a business, Anglo-American Research, in Tuscon, Arizona where they had developed an improved ozone generator for medical applications. So, accompanied by Dr. Daniel Hetrick, a microbiologist, I flew out there to investigate. We were impressed by the design of the generator’s all-glass corona-discharge tube, and by Wainwright, himself, because it appeared that he had a number of technologies that interested us, such as:
1. He showed us an indoor greenhouse without having any windows. There were two rows of benches holding trays of plants growing under fluorescent grow-lamps. We were told that both rows had been planted three weeks beforehand. However, one row had grown much larger than the other, where the plants were still very small. Basil explained that both rows had received the exact same amount of irrigation that was sprayed by nozzles with water pumped from a 20-gallon aquarium at the end of each bench. However, the nozzles on the bench with the most plant-growth were equipped with electrodes that ‘activated’ the water. There were duplicate groups of plants on each bench. At one end, there were vines that could climb up wooden stakes. On the bench containing the large vines, Basil instructed me to search in the soil below the stakes and I found fairly large lumps that he identified as being potatoes that would be ready for harvest in another 3 weeks. To me, that was amazing, and represented a solution to the World’s food problems by providing multiple crops per year.
2. There was another. smaller room that contained a 55-gallon drum that was filled with water. On top of the drum, there was a pump with a long nozzle surrounded by electric coils. The nozzle was pointed toward a corrugated metal sheet leaning against a wall about ten feet away. Basil explained that this was designed as another way to electrify water and that the sheet had been grounded. He shut off the lights and turned on the pump so that the water sprayed on the plate. There was a faint buzzing sound and it looked like tiny sparkles dancing on the plate where the water hit. Basil said: “ If you put your hand in the water jet, it will attract your attention rather quickly.” I accepted his word and kept both hands in my pockets, because I understood how cattle prods work. Then, he told us to step back because he was going to increase the electric power (by using a variac, or potentiometer). This time, the sparks emitted a distinct snapping sound and were much brighter. He told us that such power would knock a man down. Once more, he increased the power. The sparks became much larger and the snapping sound turned into a loud snarl. He told us that, at that level, the sparks could be fatal.
When I asked the purpose of this development, he explained that he had done the work for the British Army so as to protect tanks or vehicles from being attacked with ‘Molotov Cocktails’, thrown by hand at close range.
3. Plasma Arc Furnace: this was another application when making water electro-
conductive. Basil explained that he imposed high-current DC power on top of AC current at varying frequencies. He had two streams of water intersect to create the arc by making one stream + (positive) and the other – (negative). Thus, he could create sustainable arcs at very high temperatures while utilizing the water for cooling the surrounding chamber. Unlike metal electrodes that melt, the water jets were self-sustaining. He envisioned using such a furnace to safely destroy toxic materials, such as nerve gas war heads & atomic wastes.
When getting ready to leave, we explained that our interest in ozone was to utilize it for purifying blood, or plasma products, so as to prevent the accidental transfer of diseases via transfusions. Basil then handed me one of his generators that he was selling @ $8500, telling me to take it back to Florida and use it. At that point, I suggested that he should bring his group to Florida so that we could collaborate more closely.
Sure enough, he appeared on our doorstep in Lake Worth about six months later, accompanied by his wife, Margie; his Executive Secretary, Edward Frizzell & his fiancee. They stayed with us for about ten days until they found suitable quarters in Fort Lauderdale for their entire group of seven people. Anglo-American Research set up a clinic, in Fort Lauderdale, where they commenced to treat patients with ozone therapies. Basil employed a Physician (D.O.) & a Nurse. But, when I found that he sometimes treated patients in their absence, I warned him in writing that he was breaking the laws for the practice of medicine.
Meanwhile, I helped to establish a new company under the name of International Biostimulation Corporation to promote Basil’s method for improved plant growth.
My friend, George Gettemuller, was elected President. The shares were distributed among five people, including Basil & myself. George obtained funding from the Gold Leaf Nursery, a grower of ornamental plants in Boynton Beach. We didn’t want to start with food products because of the Department of Agriculture’s regulations.
We built a shed inside one of their shade-houses. The roof of the shed was made of translucent fiberglass so as allow sunlight to pass through, and to prevent rain falling on the plants to be grown inside. As Basil had done before, we set up two parallel benches for the plants and equipped them with spray nozzles. Basil supplied the electronic equipment for the ‘activated’ water on one bench. However, we ran into problems with short circuits due to the high humidity. I told Basil that he needed to utilize shielded cables, like military field equipment. But, he kept making jury-rigged modifications that never held up, until suddenly being arrested & jailed for ‘Practicing Medicine without a license’ and for ‘Shipping Unregistered Medical Equipment across State lines’. I arranged for my attorney. James R. Eddy, to represent Basil and attempted to have him released on bond. While still in jail, Basil communicated with his technicians who tried to fix the electrical problems in our experimental greenhouse. But, we never got the equipment to work reliably. It kept breaking down. So, we never raised any plants successfully with his system. They grew slowly, just the same as the rest of the plants in the nursery.
Basil stopped paying the attorney and fired him after six weeks in jail. During 18 months in prison, he engaged two more attorneys to represent him before finally being released on bond to prepare for trial. At that point, Basil set up a new corporation named Polyatomic Apherisis, Inc., based in Pompano Beach, before moving to Boca Raton. When I first met Basil in Arizona, he claimed that his ozone generators were the best for medical applications because he adjusted the frequency of the output gas mixture (02 & 03) to the Earth’s natural frequency of 8.73 cycles/second (Herz). We tested Basil’s generator against five others, including several made in Germany, and concluded that ozone is ozone as long as the volumes & concentrations were the same.
With Polyatomic Apherisis, he claimed to be able to selectively produce 03, 04, 06, and 08, etc., and combinations thereof. Further, he took a piece of standard laboratory glass apparatus, known as a cascade tube, having a series of inward dimples in the lower surface. and claimed that he developed it to purify blood by flowing it downward with the tube set at an angle, while passing the gas mixture above the liquid in the opposite direction of flow. He had seen the use of peristaltic pumps in our blood purification apparatus and used them to control the flow rate as blood was withdrawn from a patient’s arm to flow through the cascade tube, and then be returned to a vein in the other arm on a continuous basis.
Basil spent quite a bit of his time raising money for his new company. He rented meeting rooms in local hotels & motels and advertised lectures on Polyatomic Apherisis, described as a new medical breakthrough. This is how he attracted the interest of potential investors. I avoided attending any of them, because I already was familiar with the technique and had reservations because he used the same cascade tube for successive patient treatments after only cleaning the tube with a bottle brush. I knew that the FDA would NEVER approve such a procedure. However, I was still using his ozone generator for blood & plasma purification at our company, Hemozone Corporation. So, I tried to help Basil as best I could without getting involved in his questionable activities. In doing so, I drove him, his wife, and Edward Frizzell up to Orlando and introduced them to a good friend who was in charge of the Microbiology Department of a major University and was vacationing at Disney World. We had a good meeting at one of the hotels and arrived at an agreement that our purification system would be tested (including Basil’s ozone generator) against a variety of disease organisms. However, it was firmly requested that no information would be released to the public until a formal peer-reviewed report had been published in a leading medical journal.
A key feature of our purification system was a ‘Reactor Column’ that contained 20’ of 1/8” I.D. tubing wrapped around a 2” diameter mandrel where the fluid & gas mixture was intimately blended inside the mandrel and entered the circular turns at the bottom of the column in the form of a froth consisting of tiny bubbles that measured an average of 1/32nd of an inch in diameter, depending upon the viscosity of the fluid. It was mathematically determined that the average wall thickness of these bubbles was on the order of 5 microns, which is about the same size of most organisms. Each bubble contained molecules of ozone which we had produced at a concentration of 20 ug/ml (twenty micrograms per milliliter). Thus. the thin wall thickness permitted maximum contact between ozone molecules and any entrained organisms from either side of the bubbles. The contact time in the column was adjustable by varying the pump speeds. Some forty (40) different organisms were tested during the next few months, including: molds, yeasts, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. It was confirmed that it was possible to obtain 100% kill within only 60 seconds contact time for ALL these organisms! When Basil heard these preliminary results, he leaked information to The Family Health News, a small newspaper published in Miami, that incorrectly reported that his ozone generator killed 40 viruses and identified the researcher and his University, despite Basil’s pledge to refrain from doing so. That put an end to any further studies in that facility and badly strained the relationship with my friend.
Even so, no one since has established such efficacy in purifying infected blood, or plasma, to that degree so quickly. We considered it to be a breakthrough and submitted information to the FDA, but ran into a stonewall of opposition to allow any human testing. We tried to interest the American Red Cross without success.
It was only a few years later when Baxter Healthcare lost over $1 Billion when they had to withdraw their Worldwide inventories of plasma products due to possible Hepatitis contamination that could have been prevented with our purification system. A dirty little secret is that the hemophiliac population in Canada was wiped out!
Getting back to Basil’s situation, he was raising capital by selling stock in his new company, plus continuing to produce & sell ozone generators. At one point, he used my Reactor Column to treat blood taken from a friend of mine, Jim Pauls, who was HIV+, as described within the attached reports on Anglo-American Research letterheads. We knew that HIV is relatively fragile as compared to some other organisms, such as anthrax. So, we increased the speed of the pumps and found that HIV could be completely eliminated from blood within as little as 15 seconds contact time with ozone, as reported by PCR testing of the treated specimens at BioTest Laboratory in Miami. Later, Basil continued to treat Jim and claimed to have cured him. However, my wife & I were the last visitors to see him before he died in a Miami Hospice.
But, suddenly, Basil was arrested again, within just six months after being released from jail. This time, he was charged with fraud, and for selling unregistered stock. One investor, Susan Hilton, of Boca Raton, claimed that she had invested $100,000 without receiving any stock certificates. So, Basil spent another 18 months in jail before some supporters arranged his release by posting bail in the amount of $1 million. He was allowed several months to prepare for trial that was scheduled for November of 1995. However, he disappeared a few weeks before the trial and finally turned up in Nairobi, Kenya, where he has continued his activities in much the same manner. There, he commenced to call himself, ‘Dr. Stone’. His wife left him and returned to the UK. So, Basil took up with a variety of women, and now calls himself Dr. Wainwright, although he never has received a degree from ANY university.
There are interesting sequels to this story. Not long after Basil fled the U.S., I met William O. Cave, Sr. who, along with Ruth Kurz, had invested $100,000 in Polyatomic Apherisis. Bill Cave had become a believer in the medical uses of ozone, but had some mixed emotions about Basil. He became a Director of Hemozone Corporation and funded some of our work developing our own ozone generators. He told me that Basil had taken him up to Boynton Beach one evening at about 7:00 P.M. and showed him the International Biostimulation shed in the shade-house that was described beforehand. There were two rows of plants, one of them being many times larger than the other. Apparently, Basil had done this with other investors to impress them with his technology. It would have been easy for one of his assistants to go up there and switch the plants around after the workers had left for the day. It was a perfect set-up, like salting a worthless mine with gold or diamonds! Even today, Basil’s website contains references to increased plant growth at a “classified location in Florida”.
Several years ago, I was placed in contact with David Wang, who is a Naturopath practicing in Vancouver, B.C. He told me that he had headed up a group in Canada that also raised funds for Basil’s defense in Court. Shortly before the trial was scheduled to take place in South Florida, Basil flew up to Vancouver and received the better part of $1 million from Dr. Wang. Basil then asked him if he could borrow his van, in order to pick up something from the Chemist’ shop. That was the last time that he saw Basil, the money, or the van.
If you simply look up in the Search Box, Basil Earle Wainwright, you’ll find many different websites about him and Polyatomic Apherisis, plus later developments that he claims to have accomplished – like turning people HIV – (negative), curing cancer, etc. When discussing his situation, Basil portrays himself as an innocent victim of oppression by the World pharmaceutical industry, and by corrupt Government Officials. So, I am attaching copies of his arrest record in Florida. In addition, further investigation shows that he spent three years in a UK prison, before coming to the U.S. Now he is not welcome in both countries. And, I doubt that he could reside in Canada, either. He has been operating in Kenya, right in the heart of Africa, where AIDS is creating tens of millions of orphans due to the loss of their parents. Surely, if there is any truth to his claims of .success in curing AIDS, the local officials should be beating a path to his door. Yet, there have been repeated efforts to deport him from Kenya. Somehow, he has been able to avoid such action. (In South America, it is called ‘Cumshaw’, or bribery.)
There have been a number of con-artists that have seized upon medical ozone as a means of making money. It turns out that Wainwright has been a common denominator among many of them, as you will see from the following events:
One of the first such people seeking to utilize ozone in the U.S. was Lucas Boeve, who was a West Point graduate, and a retired Green Beret Colonel. He had become familiar with ozone therapies while stationed in Germany, where several thousand MD’s have been using it successfully for many years. He retired and came back to NYC and founded Excaliber, Inc. to promote the medical uses of ozone. One of his patients was Terrence McGrath, another Englishman, who had a stomach tumor that was difficult to cure, as shown by the enclosed copies of medical records. Boeve was successful, using ozone. Then, to show his appreciation, McGrath founded a competitive firm under the name of Medizone International, Inc., also headquartered in NYC. Another friend of mine, Dr. George White, was one of the founding Directors. George was instrumental in bringing Wainwright over from the UK to help produce ozone generators, instead of importing them from Germany. Karl Keck, President of PCI Ozone & Controls in West Caldwell, NJ, told me some years later that Wainwright & McGrath had commissioned his company to develop a medical ozone generator. But, when it was ready for delivery six months later, Medizone could not pay for it and he had to find another buyer. Medizone did raise quite a few million dollars by selling stock. However, when George realized that the company stock was being manipulated, he resigned his position. They spent large sums on Public Relations promotions and funded some laboratory work in an attempt to secure FDA approval for human studies, Basil set up a study at St. Michaels Hospital, in Newark, NJ, to treat AIDS patients with ozone. But, it only lasted three weeks before State authorities shut it down. Yet, Basil claimed that it was a great success. The fact of the matter is that there never was any follow-up on the patients to ascertain any real improvement in their condition. Subsequently, Basil joined Lucas Boeve in his endeavors to promote medical ozone.
Within a few years, McGrath was charged with appropriating corporate funds and was forced out of office. Dr. Joseph Latino replaced him as President, only to have the same thing happen, again. The next President was Gerard Sunnen, M.D., who resigned a few years later after his medical license was revoked by the State of New York for unethical behavior. All told, Medizone has been reorganized about six times, most recently in California.
Lucas Boeve left NYC to set up a clinic on Key Biscayne, outside of Miami. Dr. Hetrick & I went down there, along with some other people, to witness some ozone therapies. Lucas had a number of patients living there from all around the country. They testified how much good ozone treatments had done for them. Lucas demonstrated IV ozone injections where he utilized a 50cc hypodermic syringe to inject ozone into a vein. I asked him how fast the gas was injected. His answer was: “Very slowly.” At that time, Lucas was in his mid-fifties and was living with a young blonde who ran the business side of the clinic. Later, we heard that he returned home one evening to find an empty house: no furniture, not even his clothes in the bedroom closet! Soon, we heard that Lucas had fled the country to avoid an arrest warrant and had set up a clinic in the Dominican Republic. There have been repeated rumors that he treated the basketball player, ‘Magic’ Johnson who was reported to be HIV+. All that I really know is that Johnson doesn’t appear to have come down with AIDS during the last ten years.
Back about 1995, Richard Harley, an Afro-American, set up an ozone clinic in the Pocano Mountains, not far from Philadelphia. He had learned about ozone therapies when his live-in girlfriend was a Nurse at St. Michaels Hospital. Somehow, he met Basil and copied his technique of treating patients & selling unregistered stock. For awhile, Sue Ann Taylor helped him to set up his office, until she realized that it was a scam operation. Sure, enough, the FDA found out about it and shut it down, and charged him with practicing medicine without a license. The Securities & Exchange Commission also prosecuted him for selling unregistered stock. His first trial resulted in a hung jury when he played the Race Card (like O, J, Simpson did), He was convicted after a second trial, but I never heard about a sentence. I learned about this from Sue Ann, now living in Canton, GA, nearby where I have a Summer Home.
Sue Ann, previously, had gone to Cebu City, in the Philippines, to observe the treatment of AIDS patients from Australia by Dr. Phillip Dugrot, under Basil’s instructions and using his equipment. This is another case where the clinic was shut down by authorities, because one of the patients died soon after operations started. Supposedly, the patients were showing considerable improvement after only a few weeks of treatment. Sue Anne was concerned that ozone was being administered in a small unventilated room and could have caused a lung problem. Similar to the St. Michaels study, the patients returned home without any follow-up. Yet, Basil still cites this as a success.
There is no question, but that Basil has considerable technology & capabilities. But, the problem is that he uses them to line his own pockets without regard to laws or societal standards. He, now, is touting W.D.D.S. (Wainwright Direct Delivery System), wherein he can treat many people at the same time by injecting measured amounts of ozone into their veins. I attribute this to the probable use of peristaltic pumps having multiple cartridges on a common shaft so that multiple needles can feed the gas mixture of 02/03 at the same flow rate. Additionally, Basil has obtained several U.S. patents. The first one, No. 5,052,382, was assigned to Medizone. The last one, 6,027,688, was applied for in 1995 and took over five years to be issued. They both contain claims for many things that can be proven to have been in the Public Domain before the patent was applied for. It is one thing to obtain a patent, and quite another to defend it, if required.
